Yoga Questions Answered

There are many different types of exercise that people can do to get into shape, but if you want to get both your body and mind in top condition, you may want to consider making yoga one of your main forms of exercise. Many people think that you have to be a contortionist to be able to do yoga, but this is an activity that you can slowly ease your way into, and go along at your own pace until you are comfortable with the postures. If you are thinking about getting into yoga, but would like to learn more first, here are the answers to some of the most commonly-asked questions about yoga:

Question: Can I learn yoga from videos and books?
Answer: Videos are great to practice with once you already know how to do the postures, and books are wonderful reference material. But you need to some actual classes first. It is essential that you have a qualified yoga instructor teach you how to do the postures properly, because like any exercise, if you do it wrong, you risk injury. Once you learn, it is a great idea to take advantage of videos and books for home workouts.

Question: Do I need expensive gear to do yoga?
Answer: No. You don’t even need to have a pair of sneakers, which can get pretty pricey, because you do yoga in your bare feet. All you need is a comfortable, loose-fitting or at least non-restrictive outfit, and a yoga mat, which you can get for less than $20.

Question: How will yoga help me get into better shape?
Answer: When you practice yoga, you are practicing holding postures that are not normal body postures, which builds strength and muscle tone. And, when you build muscle tone, you will also begin to look slimmer. Those who practice yoga also find that they have improved flexibility, posture and balance.

Question: What other benefits will I get from yoga?
Answer: There are numerous benefits to practicing yoga, aside from getting into great shape. Your lung capacity will improve because of the breathing techniques you will be practicing, so you will be breathing easier. And, you will learn meditation and other relaxation techniques, and will soon notice that you are not as stressed out and that you are sleeping better.
