If you have ever slept withsomeone who has sleep apnea, you have experienced what it is like. Constantly being awakened in the middle of the night, pushing them over onto their side only to waken again and again when they return to laying on their back. The noisy racket does not appear to bother the sleeper, but can bother their partner to such a great extent that there are many assaults a year on snoring sleepers by their sleep mates. Just before you start to bash your noisy partner with bulky, weighty items, there are several medical causes for snoring that you should consider.

Relaxed muscles in the neck caused by adult beverages, medications with sleepiness as a side effect can promote snoring, not to mention the fact that oversized tonsils or adenoids can cause snoring as well. Obstructed nasal passages such as a stuffy nose can cause snoring, so if your snoring sleeper is sensitive during hay fever season, that could be the reason. If the snoring is overly loud, raspy, and continuous, there are medical doctors and sleep clinics specially operating to help with sleep disturbances, and surgery could be necessary.

Snoring followed by the sleeper appearing to cease breathing completely is known as sleep apnea and is an extremely serious situation. Sleep apnea can cause stokes, high blood pressure, impotency, weight gain, and headaches. Therefore, you should seek medical advice and attention for this issue. There are also many devices available for sale that can help you find relief for sleep apnea while you carry out your physician’s orders as they relate to long term changes.

If the snoring is light, you can take some preventative measures. Regular exercise and losing weight can assist with the problem. In addition, avoid taking medication that makes you sleepy, and try to sleep on your side instead of your back. Over the years, many people have tried attaching a ball onto the small of their back, or placing some sort of large object behind them before they go to bed. These items may not be necessary as relief may come from a much more simple action. Propping a pillow behind you can help keep you from rolling over on to your back during the night thus disturbing your sleep mate again.

Snoring and sleep apnea are potentially very serious conditions. While snoring is a regular part of life for everyone, especially if they are overly relaxed or extremely tired, snoring and sleep apnea problems have consequences not just for the sufferer of these conditions but also for those residing with the sufferer. Steps should be taken to reduce these issues not just for the health of the sufferer, but also for the well-being the family members around them who are suffering because of the noise.
