The hCG Diet – A Downright Scary New Fad

9 March 2011 2,484 views No Comment

This has to be one of the scariest new fads to hit the wellness industry in quite some time!

While hCG is a naturally produced hormone in women during pregnancy, medical experts not only agree that there is no proof to back these new overly-hyped weight loss claims, this new fad is downright dangerous.

Irrelevant of the use of hCG, anything that recommends such a restriction in daily caloric intake is unhealthy and the hCG diet does just that, with merely a 500 calorie per day recommendation, a near starvation diet.

Anyone who has taken part in a severe a calorie restricted diet already knows the pitfalls associated with such programs. Not only does one deal with all of the negative aspects that arise during such caloric restricted periods, more often than not, weight gain upon completion of the program, often exceeds what may have been lost once during.

Research has shown time and again this yo-yo type dieting, is in fact, more harmful to the body then simply maintaining an overweight status without the loss and gain.

The premise behind the hCG claims is that the “diet” curbs your appetite by making your body think that it is in fact pregnant, and in doing so increases your body’s fat burning as though there were a fetus present.

ABC news recently contacted more than 20 medical experts who’ve vehmentitly denied these claims. They say not only has hCG not been proven effective, as there is absolutely no medical evidence to support it’s weight loss claims, but more importantly, the health risks associated with the hCG diet includes such things as blood clots, pulmonary embolism, depression and headaches, and far outweigh the potential short-term benefits.

Dr. David Katz, Director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center says, “This isn’t just nonsense, this is dangerous! Go on the hCG diet, I think you’re playing Russian roulette with your health and maybe even your life.”

While the use of hCG for such purposes is in fact still legal, it is important to note that even the FDA does not approve of such use for weight loss as research has proven it to be not only ineffectual, but also dangerous. The homeopathic version of hCG is not only not recommended, it is not even recognized by the FDA, which is very telling in and of itself.

At nearly a 70% obesity rate in this country, there is no doubt a desire for so many to lose the unwanted weight they currently carry. While this is absolutely understandable, it is in no way acceptable to jeopardize your health or well-being on such an unproven, potentially dangerous option.
