Feeling good about yourself can lower your risk more than twofold, study suggests

(HealthDay News) — People who say their lives have a purpose are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease or its precursor, mild cognitive impairment, a new study suggests.
As the population ages and dementia becomes a more frequent diagnosis, there’s increasing impetus to determine the causes of the disease, associated risk factors and how to prevent it, explained study co-author Dr. Aron S. Buchman, an associate professor in the department of neurological sciences at Rush University Medical Center in …

In studies with mice, amino acid reduced fat deposits and boosted metabolism
(HealthDay News) — An amino acid called isoleucine may play an important role in weight loss, a new study suggests.
Japanese researchers fed mice a high-fat diet (45 percent of calories from fat) for six weeks. After the first two weeks, the mice were divided into two groups. One group received isoleucine in their drinking water while the control group received an inert substance. This continued for the remainder of the study.

Comparison of plans finds differences in mood despite similar weight loss
(HealthDay News) — Both a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet such as the popular Atkins program and a low-fat, high-carb diet appear to help people lose pounds over the course of a year.
But as for mood? Only the low-fat diets will result in long-term improvement in mood, according to a study in the Nov. 9 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.
People on both diets consumed roughly the same number of calories.
“Both an energy-reduced, very low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet and a conventional high-carbohydrate, low-fat …

Seven hours of rest a night is important for good health, expert says

WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration is challenging makers of alcohol-infused energy drinks to prove their beverages are safe, citing complaints that the products can cause risky behavior and injury.
The FDA issued a letter Friday to 30 beverage manufacturers, giving them 30 days to provide evidence that the combination of caffeine and alcohol is safe.
“Today the FDA has listed caffeine only as an ingredient for use in soft drinks,” said Deputy Commissioner Dr. Joshua Sharfstein. “The agency has not approved caffeine for use in alcoholic …

Not being well-rested can be dangerous for those whose jobs require quick reactions, researchers say
(HealthDay News) — Sleep-deprived people may put themselves and others at risk when they need to make split-second decisions, U.S. researchers have found.
The study, which included 49 U.S. military cadets, looked at how sleep deprivation affected information-integration, a process that relies heavily on instantaneous, gut-feeling decisions.
“It’s important to understand this domain of procedural learning because information-integration — the fast and accurate strategy — is critical in situations when soldiers need to make split-second decisions based about …
